Reinhart makes 'Idol's' top 5, loses duet partner

It was a bittersweet night for “American Idol” contestant Haley Reinhart.

She was the first Idol to make it into the top 5 Thursday.

But it came at the expense of losing perennial duet partner and rumored boyfriend Casey Abrams.

Abrams did nothing to quell those rumors during one of the show's more memorable singouts. His rendition of “I Put a Spell on You” ended with his arm around Reinhart crooning “because you're mine” to her. Reinhart's tears were obvious, but she managed a smile.

It's unclear where the Wheeling native stands in the competition.

Reinhart was one of the better performers Wednesday night, but host Ryan Seacrest revealed the results were in “random order” Thursday, which meant even though Jacob Lusk and Scotty McCreery were the last two sent to safety, technically there was no bottom three.

With the judges providing little direction and most remaining Idols turning in solid performances Wednesday night, it would seem to be a wide-open field.

Still Reinhart's been an almost permanent fixture in the bottom three since the top 12 were announced, only escaping it twice in the last eight weeks.

If she hopes to make it further, perhaps Reinhart would do well to follow the advice mentor Jimmy Iovine gave her on Thursday's show.

“Haley doesn't know who she is yet. If she goes home it's because of that,”

Reinhart's reaction to that critique had to be bleeped out, but it's a point the judges have also harped on the most.

Rounding out the top 5 with Reinhart are Lusk, McCreery, Lauren Alaina and James Durbin.

The remaining Idols take the stage at 7 p.m. next Wednesday on Fox.
