Rotary supports reading at Schaumburg Elementary School
Schaumburg A.M. Rotary recently donated $1,000 of reading materials to Winston Churchill Elementary School. Club President Karen Maczka-Bishop welcomed Churchill Principal Lisa Hopkins, Asst. Principal Jessica Andruch-Lindblade and grades 5 & 6 teacher Tyler Huffman at its April 20th meeting where they thanked Rotarians for their donation and support and informed club members about the April 20th “Roar Into Reading” family literacy night event sponsored by school staff and the PTA. More than 400 people participated in the evening that was designed to celebrate and showcase student accomplishments in the areas of reading and writing.
With the donation Churchill School purchased more than 200 grade appropriate paperback books from Scholastic, Inc. that were awarded to students as take-home door prizes, which further reinforces the home/school connection as it pertains to education and developing independent reading skills. The school also purchased a wide variety of guided reading books and related materials that will be used for small group reading instruction, allowing teachers to tailor instruction and strategies according to the age/grade level and reading ability of students.
Schaumburg A.M. Rotary meets Wednesday mornings at 7:00 a.m. at Poplar Creek Country Club in Hoffman Estates. Rotarians participate in community service projects both at home and abroad and work to promote good will, peace and understanding. Inquiries regarding membership are welcome.
