Reinhart safe, but 'Idol' boots front-runner
“American Idol” front-runner Pia Toscano reacted with poise when host Ryan Seacrest announced she was voted off the show in one of the most shocking boots in Idol's history.
The judges? Not so much.
Jennifer Lopez cried, Randy Jackson shouted “No!” and a confused Steven Tyler turned around and looked at the audience. OK, so Tyler reacted as usual.
Meanwhile Wheeling's Haley Reinhart frowned and looked appropriately sad for Toscano on the “safe couch” snuggling next to Casey Abrams and doing nothing to quell rumors the two are an Idol couple. She even tossed the camera a few “happy to be here” smiles.
After the judges did what they could to compose themselves, they blamed Idol viewers for not voting enough for Toscano.
For the first time in a while, Seacrest didn't say how many votes were cast after Wednesday's show.
“I'm never upset, never mad, but this makes me mad,” Jackson said.
“I have no idea what just happened here,” said a teary Lopez who alternated between holding her head in her hands and outright sobbing “I'm shocked and angry.”
Even Tyler seemed to realize something was off in Idol's world telling voters that “A lack of passion is unforgivable.”
From the very beginning Toscano, 22, oozed tons of talent and tons of confidence, sometimes even talking about the next week before the current week's results were known, assuming she'd make the cut. She was never out of tune and her version of “River Deep Mountain High” Wednesday was one of her best yet.
Now Haley and only one other girl — Lauren Alaina — remain with six males in the top eight.
But take a breath, Haley wasn't even in the bottom three this week after judges liked her take on Janis Joplin's “Piece of My Heart.”
And as Pia learned, it's really the voters who matter.
