Incumbents survive challenge in Lisle

Lisle voters apparently decided now isn’t the time to make a change on the village board.

Incumbent trustees Ed Young, Mark Boyle and Cathy Cawiezel kept their seats, with all 27 precincts reporting. Both non-incumbents in the race — Richard Wilkie and Gary Ledvora — came up short.

Unofficial totals showed Cawiezel with 1,554 votes, Boyle with 1,322 votes, Young with 1,295, Wilkie with 1,120 votes and Ledvora with 1,046 votes.

The three incumbents are schedualed to start their new terms next month. During the campaign, they focused on the village board’s accomplishments during the past four years.

One example is the multimillion dollar beautification of Main Street in downtown Lisle, which Young, Boyle and Cawiezel agree will pay off with increased development once the economy recovers.

They said the village is working with different groups to brainstorm ideas on how to develop specific properties, including the old village hall site at Main and Burlington Avenue. The parcel has been vacant since the former municipal center was razed in 2003.

Another issue raised during the campaign was the fate of the 60-acre parcel that Meijer owns along Maple Avenue near Benedictine University. All the candidates said they hope the retailer could be persuaded to sell the vacant land.
