Lakemoor family says nurse gave 11-year-old a needle
A Lakemoor mother is questioning why a nurse at a Libertyville hospital gave her 11-year-old daughter a souvenir syringe and needle to take home after a visit over the weekend.
Maggie Kaufman and her mother, Lorrie, were at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville on Friday visiting a friend when a recently hired nurse gave the 11-year-old the gift, according to Lorrie Kaufman.
Lorrie Kaufman told ABC 7 she saw the nurse let her daughter hold a syringe and IV monitor, but didn't know the nurse let Maggie pick out a needle to keep until they left the hospital.
The hospital is conducting an internal investigation and deeply regrets a syringe was taken home by Maggie, according to a statement.
The nurse, who the hospital says was recently hired, has been suspended pending the investigation.
“Usually you give a kid a sucker or a sticker,” Lorrie Kaufman said in an ABC 7 interview. “You don't give them needles.”
The hospital says it has taken steps to make sure this does not happen again.
“Our leadership has been in touch with the family to offer our apologies and to ensure that this young girl was not injured,” the hospital said in a statement.
