Gurnee gymnasts do well at tournament

The name of the meet says it all: BIG Dreams! And that’s certainly what the Level 5 girls from Ultimate Gymnastics of Gurnee had on their minds at the recent competition, which was hosted by Balance Institute of Gymnastics at Lyons Township High School.

The Level 5 team posted three individual all-around winners at the meet and a collection of other medals. Taking the top spot in the all-around were Aaliyah Humphreys (7-8 year age group), Grace Miller (9 years) and Jessica Pasquesi (10 years). Their scores were 36.65, 36.90 and 37.075, respectively.

In the 7-8 age group, the Ultimate girls also claimed the silver (Hannah McCue) and bronze (Gracie Gnatt) medals in the all-around. Hannah also placed first on uneven bars.

At Level 6, Leah Medenwaldt also came away with all-around gold in the 7- to 10-year-old age group. She had a consistent meet, placing second on vault and third on both bars and floor exercise. In the same age group, Ally Weihs scored 9.45 on beam to take the top spot, and Sonte Turnage won silver on bars and bronze in the all-around.

In the older, 12-plus age group, Lake Forest’s Belle Smith placed third on both bars and floor.

BIG was exactly the way to describe the performance by Level 7’s Ella Peter. Competing in the 7-10 group, she came away with one silver medal on vault, but gold on the three other events and in the all-around. Her score: an outstanding 37.975.

Among the 12-year-old Level 7s, Ximena Gomez won beam, Abigail Pierce won floor and Sara Becker won bars. In addition, 11-year-old Emily Whitis placed first on floor and second on beam, and 13-year-old Carli Betman came away with gold on floor and bronze on vault.

The Level 9 girls continued their successful season. Ally Hoyer placed first on floor and in the all-around in the Junior A age group. She also won silver on beam and bronze on vault.

Her teammate, Lauren Marshall, placed third on beam. In the Senior A age group, Gurnee’s Emily Basara also won gold in the all-around and added two bronze medals for vault and floor exercise.
