Vernon Hills finishes off Waukegan
Vernon Hills’ baseball team outlasted the rain and blustery conditions — and visiting Waukegan on Wednesday.
The Cougars pulled out a 1-0 win, completing their game suspended game from March 18 that was called due to darkness after 6 innings.
Waukegan threatened in the seventh with a runner on second base an one out. But Tyler Feece struck out the next two batters.
In the bottom of the seventh, with one out, Eric Lang reached on a walk. He stole second base. Then, after M.J. Crowley flew out, Lang stole third.
With two strikes, Chris Argianas hit a ground ball up the middle that was fielded cleanly by Bobby Berrera and led to the third out.
In the top of the eighth, Waukegan’s leadoff hitter doubled and stole third. After a walk and steal, the Bulldogs had men on second and third. But Feece rose to the occasion with a strike out to end the threat.
The Cougars scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning.
After one out, Chris Marras doubled to right. Waukegan intentionally walked cleanup hitter Brian Palmer. Steven Nelson then drew a walk to load the bases.
Ryan Knopoff drew a full count before he hit a flyball that fell safely in center field, scoring the winning run.
