Prospect goes 2-0 in Florida
Prospect’s baseball team enjoyed wonderful weather with temperatures in the 80s during its spring trip to Fort Myers, Fla.
The Knights enjoyed the results on the field, too. They finished 2-0 with a 5-2 victory over Cypress Lake on Monday afternoon.
Prospect won its other varsity game 10-2 over South Fort Myers on Friday.
“We couldn’t have asked for anything better in both games,” said Prospect coach Ross Giusti. “We played solid defense and our pitchers were around the plate and let the defense do its job.
“One through nine (the lineup) in both games, everybody contributed. We were hitting behind runners and executing everything.”
Kurt Donner allowed 2 runs in 4 innings for Monday’s win. Ben Menich had 7 strikeouts in 3 innings for the save and provided some insurance with a 2-run double in the seventh.
“He was outstanding,” Giusti said.
Prospect broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the fifth when Steve Dazzo doubled and scored on Brian Bauer’s single. The first runs came in the first inning as Luke Bergman and Matt Molini singles were followed by Jack Landwehr’s sacrifice fly and Bauer’s RBI double.
“(Bauer) had a great trip,” Giusti said.
Senior catcher Kevin Miller threw out a Cypress Lake runner trying to steal who Giusti was told had never been thrown out in four years.
Landwehr won the opener with 4 solid innings and homered.
“It was a great trip and the kids have been awesome,” Giusti said.
Leyden 4, Riverside-Brookfield 4 (susp.): Justin Stawychny hit a 2-run homer for Leyden in a game suspended after seven innings because of darkness. The two teams will try to finish the game today.
South Elgin 3, Elk Grove 1: Elk Grove (1-2) was outhit 6-3 in the nonconference home loss.
