Hersey staff showed good judgment in NYC

I was one of the proud grandparents that was able to go and see two of my grandchildren from the Hersey High School bands perform last week at Carnegie Hall. What a fantastic job they did.

It was promoted as the best of the Midwest. What an honor to be invited and they really outdid themselves. Good job, guys.

One of the many highlights of the trip was for all to see a play on Broadway, “American Idiot.” The day of that show my daughter said she had heard that there might be some raunchy parts to it (in case I didn’t want to go). I didn’t go. And was I glad.

From the very start, it was raunchy. At a point in the play, the band director conferred with others (who were squirming in their seats) and came back and told the entire band “they were all leaving.” This is not what they wanted their students to see.

I admire and say kudos to the director, Mr. Casagrande, and the Hersey teachers to be such a good example to the students. If what you see is inappropriate, make a stand and leave. Hopefully, they got at least some of their money back.

When I looked online for a review, nothing was said about all of the sex and bad language. The review did say how great it was. Hersey, I am proud of you ... for your fantastic job in your performance and Mr. Casagrande for showing the kids some backbone and character. Arlington Heights can be proud.
