“No” on Lakemoor term limits

Daily Herald Editorial Board

Proponents of a term limits referendum in Lakemoor want to set an example. Upset with how the state is being run and wishing lawmakers in Springfield had a limit on years of service, they’re supporting a ballot question asking whether voters want to limit the village president and trustees to three terms in office, or up to 12 years. The limits would go into effect in 2013 if passed, giving current trustees and the village president up to three more terms, no matter how long they’ve already served. While we appreciate the sentiment, we urge Lakemoor citizens to oppose the referendum. Voters already can limit terms by voting an elected official out of office and, conversely, they have the power to judge whether someone deserves a fourth term or more. By voting NO on the referendum April 5, citizens will retain full power to judge a candidate on his or her qualifications.
