Theater D in Deerfield can’t stop their “Squabbles”

Every so often one comes across a little-known play that turns out to be a true theatrical gem. “Squabbles” is one such comedic treat, and Theater D’s new production is being presented at the Patty Turner Center in Deerfield.

Playwright Marshall Karp penned this two-act comedy utilizing some of his own life experiences as a backdrop.

Having carved a successful career in advertising, and overseeing contracts for the likes of Coca-Cola, Gillette and Nestle, Karp turned to writing for television, stage and screen and live theater.

“Squabbles” follows the lives of Jerry and Alice Sloan, a successful and happy couple.

Attorney Alice is a rising star working in Washington while Jerry writes jingles for an advertising agency.

Living with them is Abe Dreyfus, Alice’s father, who loves to argue, and absolutely despises Jerry’s mother Mildred.

The real “squabbles” begin when Mildred also moves in with Jerry and Alice after her own house burns.

Director Debra Goldman has returned for her sixth Theater D production (“Affluenza,” “Moon Over Buffalo,” “Any Number Can Die,” “Rumors,” “Lend Me A Tenor”).

The cast includes Rosa Nevin, a veteran performer who had a long-running role on the daytime drama “All My Children.”

Tickets, $20, are available at the Jewett Park Community Center and the Patty Turner Center or by mail with the order form available on theaterd.com/tickets.shtml.

Tickets include a dessert buffet at intermission — with a chocolate fountain.
