For Dist. 101: Roberts, Winkle, Kozlowski

Five candidates are vying for three school board seats in Batavia Unit District 101, among them two incumbents. Longtime board member Kathleen Roberts has learned how to make things happen while keeping a realistic view of how much the board can do. Matt Winkle, a five-year incumbent, keeps a close eye on expenditures; as a member of the finance committee he is recommending $2.45 million in budget cuts. Roberts and Winkle have responded to the community by holding down expenses as well as the tax rate, and we endorse both. All three newcomers — Gregg Hodge, Cathy Dremel and Patti Kozlowski — are strong candidates for the remaining seat. We choose Kozlowski. Having taught for 37 years, she understands the educational process. She also has an extensive resume of community service with ties at local, state and national levels, and she demonstrates a working knowledge of government budgeting.
