Mars Chocolate donates $10,000 in new toys to Humanitarian Service Project

As the world's largest confectionery company with brands like Dove, M&Ms, and Snickers, Mars has been bringing smiles to millions for decades through their delicious sweets. Now M&M Mars brings smiles to needy children through their combined efforts with HSP. Dana Thoele of Mars Chocolate North America said, “We have done many food drives in the past. This time we wanted to concentrate on another thing near and dear to our hearts – helping needy children. Everybody deserves a great birthday!”

Karole Kettering, executive director of the HSP, said “The new toys will be used to fulfill Birthday wishes for impoverished children through the Children's Birthday Project. We are grateful to the associates at Mars Chocolate North America for being such great supporters of our work to brighten the lives of needy children.”

HSP's Children's Birthday Project provides 700 children ages 3-12 with a 25-30 lb. Birthday Box containing 6 new books, 6-15 new toys, stuffed animals, one new game, various other gifts such as bubbles, card games, mini toys, school supplies, and a Party-in-a-Box filled with all the items necessary to have a birthday party. The charity delivers the Birthday Box the week of their birthday to provide a memorable “Special Day” for an impoverished child in our community. A sponsorship for a child is only $54 and also includes gifts at Christmas time, back-to-school supplies, and the child's family becomes eligible for the Feed the Kids Program as well.

About The Humanitarian Service Project

HSP has earned Charity Navigator highest Four Star rating for the sixth consecutive year. HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,264 children received gifts and 150 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides a monthly food delivery and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 800 children. Feed the Kids provides low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
