Two D-15 MathCounts teams headed to state
MATHCOUNTS teams from Plum Grove and Winston Campus Junior Highs are headed to state after excelling in their regional competitions, held Feb. 5 at Oakton Community College.
For the third year in a row, Plum Grove's MATHCOUNTS team took first place at regionals. Winston Campus finished third, which was a strong enough finish to propel the team into the state competition, which will be held March 12 in Matteson.
In individual competition, four District 15 students posted top 10 finishes. From Plum Grove, seventh-grader Mark Guo finished third; seventh-grader Emily Jia finished fourth; and eighth-grader Jennie Yang finished fifth.
While Carl Sandburg Junior High School's MATHCOUNTS team did not qualify for the state competition, one of its team members — eighth-grader Christopher Umeki — did by finishing sixth in the individual standings at regionals.
Sponsored by the Professional Society of Engineers, MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, coaching, and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement and provides today's students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers.
Now in its 28th year, MATHCOUNTS is one of the country's largest and most successful education partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors, and students.
