IIT expands tech expo to 2 days

Security in the cloud might not mean much to you, but it does to your employer, or to the businesses in your community.

Companies now can consider cloud computing, where they can store data, e-mail and other services via a virtual system. The data could be stored anywhere in the world, and you might not even know where. Google provides a cloud. So does Amazon. And others are jumping into this growing industry.

“The key thing we're seeing is an increasing trust in the cloud as a viable security model,” said Ray Trygstad, industry professor of information technology and management at Illinois Institute of Technology's campus in Wheaton.

If businesses are interested in cloud services, then they need to do their homework, he said.

Examine contracts, ensure your type of security is included, and look at other features, just as you would any other contract, Trygstad said.

Trygstad and others will be presenting information on the cloud, security, hacking, computer forensics and other topics at Netsecure '11: IIT Security and Forensics Conference & Expo at the campus, 201 E. Loop Road, Wheaton.

About 200 attendees are expected Thursday and Friday, March 24 and 25, an extra day compared to last year's conference. Each day starts at 8 a.m. and includes several sponsors and presenters, including the FBI, Argonne National Laboratory, the University of Wisconsin and others.

For more information about the conference, see www.cpd.iit.edu/netsecure.

Surfing: Hoffman Estates-based Sears Holdings, parent of Sears and Kmart stores, took a jab at Amazon.com related to the eFairness legislation in a letter Thursday that wooed Amazon affiliates. Imran Jooma, president of Sears eCommerce, said that at a time when states are in fiscal distress, including Illinois, online retailers should collect and remit sales taxes that are due. Jooma said they want “affiliates here, in California, and around the country to know that you have a place with us. We recognize and value our relationship with our over 6,500 affiliate partners and the state and local communities we serve.” Jooma said that “Amazon turns its back on its customers, affiliate partners and the community to maintain an unfair competitive advantage that ultimately puts Amazon's customers at risk.” Amazon.com is reportedly threatening to leave states and terminate relationships with affiliates rather than collect and remit sales taxes.
