Support for workers could fade fast
I wonder if all these people and teachers who are demonstrating in Wisconsin would feel the same way and support the workers who run the water plants and sewer plants here in Illinois if they went on strike or did not show up for work to demonstrate?I bet that instead of support, there would be very vocal fury. After all, if these folks who have to work shifts 24 hours around the clock and seven days a week and all the holidays would decide to go on strike to get a better contract, everyone would be without water in their faucets and toilets, and they would have to have portable toilets in their driveways or garage. Why are we here in Illinois serving the voters not allowed to negotiate our contracts, not allowed to call in sick and demonstrate in another state or to on strike and be defended by these same people? We also would like to go on strike so that we could have the same work hours as teachers, the same time off and holidays, and have our wages increased 50 percent in the last five years we work so that our monthly pensions will be inflated too!So, everyone better start buying water at the grocery stores or filling the bottles they have at home now, and call up and order a portable toilet, because we are seriously thinking about joining the Wisconsin group.Kenneth Hellstern
