Human services cuts easier on politicians

Tom Cross, Illinois House Minority Leader, was quoted as saying “There is no easy cut” when it comes to balancing the state budget. (“Services wait for ax to fall”, Daily Herald, Feb. 20) It appears, however, that the cuts being proposed are “easier” politically for the powers in Springfield than not.

Cuts to human services, such as domestic abuse, drug addiction, child care and senior service programs, will likely not cost the politicians any votes come re-election time.

These are, after all, either non-voting or disenfranchised blocs of people (a.k.a. “humans”). Gov. Quinn need only look north to Wisconsin realize that proposing cuts to large voter blocs such as public workers unions will lead to swift and very public retribution.
