Elburn considers replacing playground at Community Park

Replacing the playground at the Elburn and Countryside Community Center could cost as much as $100,000, if Elburn keeps it at the size it is.

The Elburn village board’s committee of the whole will discuss the matter Monday night.

The village is considering applying to the state for an Open Space and Land Acquisition Development grant to cover part of the cost. The village, however, would have to spend the money first, then be reimbursed. Applications are due July 1 for projects to be done in 2012.

The playground is 25 years old, and some of the equipment is up to 12 years old, making it difficult to get replacement parts and equipment.

Option 1 calls for spending $50,000 now, for a play area about half the size of the current one. It would replace a two-bay swing set and a multipurpose unit, remove the sand surface and replace that with an engineered wood fiber.

Option 2 would cost $70,000, and includes replacing another playground unit.

Option 3 has a price tag of $100,000, and would include replacing some ground-level play units.

The board meets at 7 p.m. at the village hall, 301 E. North St.
