Fusing art, education in St. Charles
Visual and performing arts will be showcased Friday in St. Charles, when the Greater St. Charles Education Foundation hosts its second annual fundraising event, ArtFusion. The event is set for 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at the Norris Cultural Arts Center, 1040 Dunham Road.
It's a concert of the arts where mentors and proteges meet. Seven professional artist/mentors will share the stage with their students. The goal is to spotlight the work of talented District 303 students and highlight the importance of mentoring.
Featured mentors include: Mary Hunt, jazz vocalist; Rob Murphy, French horn; Larry Dieffenbach, pianist; Andy Masters, violin; Cheri Hunt, visual artist; Jacalyn Flynn, bagpipes and Sandy Sebolt-Pogge, cellist.
“I feel lucky that we have such talented professionals mentoring our kids. The community will get to see a rare performance of these singers and musicians on one stage that night,” said Kevin O'Donnell, president of the foundation.
ArtFusion will present visual and performing arts — bands, orchestras, and choirs — from all 17 district schools.
A live art composition by grade school students will be ongoing during the performances, and a display of sculptures and models by middle and high school students will demonstrate the link between math, science and art.
Since 1992, the foundation has raised more than $1 million to benefit District 303 students.
It annually distributes these funds through program grants to administrators and faculty, and through honorariums and college scholarships to students.
Tickets are available at the door. Suggested donation is $10 for adults and $1 for students.
