Constitution can't be taken for granted

Recent events in the Middle East have quickened the pulse of the world's oppressed people. They have seen the unthinkable become reality and must be feeling a sense of hope that, not only can change be obtained, but it can happen minus the shedding of blood.

All to the good; but, what are we to learn from this cataclysmic event? Our Democracy has appeared to serve us well even with all its warts. However, far too many Americans may not agree with this assessment when, in spite of their best efforts, they still feel marginalized due to economics, race, religion or gender identity. Various factors have come together to create this reality, not the least of which is our inability, far too often, to select sincerely trustworthy, empathetic individuals to do the business of governing.

How do we evaluate those of our numbers who step out and announce that they are the anointed one to heal the ills of a culture of self-serving. Far too often our choices are between bad and ‘badder' and once they are elected we move on and, when things turn sour, forget the responsibility we hold for putting them in office.

It seems that we should set the bar at a level that demands more from our public officials than the ability to walk and chew gum at the same time. Once seated, we must monitor their actions and decisions; attend meetings of the various governing bodies they are attached to and express our thoughts to them, each other and media without holding back.

We have come a long, long way clinging to our Constitution and basic democratic tenets, but the time will never come when we can afford to take any of this for granted.
