51-year-old Elgin man dies in I-290 crash

A 51-year-old Elgin man died Wednesday afternoon after his pickup truck crashed head-on into a light pole on Interstate 290 near Addison, police said.

Gregory Clough was the only person in the vehicle, which veered off the roadway just after 2 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-290 near Church Road, just east of Route 83, said Illinois State Police Sgt. Robert Satkiewicz.

The vehicle, described as an older model Ford pickup from the 1970s with antique license plates, was equipped with a lap seat belt, rather than a standard shoulder and lap combination, Satkiewicz said.

Clough was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:51 p.m., according to the DuPage County coroner’s office.

The cause of death remains under investigation.
