Schaumburg snow removal plan let us down
Schaumburg's snow removal plan was a disappointment. On Wednesday, I was very ill and needed to see a doctor, but plows hadn't entered our neighborhood and the village kept saying they didn't know when the streets would be clear.
My father couldn't stand by and wait, so he used his snowblower to “plow” our street himself, freeing our vehicle to get me to a doctor. Our street wasn't officially cleared until early Thursday morning.
Numerous calls to the village were met with irritation and uncertainty. I wasn't expecting much — I know the storm was difficult for everyone — but to be told multiple times that the plows were “coming soon,” when they clearly weren't, was frustrating. Luckily my illness wasn't life-threatening and none of my elderly neighbors had problems that were more serious.
My father and I noticed something as we drove to the doctor. The roads were still atrocious at 4 p.m. Wednesday (though snow had stopped falling early that day), but private sector parking lots? Sparkling and spotless! We were deeply disappointed that not even major roadways (Roselle Road, parts of Higgins) were safely clear.
I know some of these roads aren't just Schaumburg's responsibility. Even so, we felt let down by our local municipalities.
I'm grateful my father is resourceful and took matters into his own hands — I'd still be waiting to get to a doctor if we left it up to the village of Schaumburg.
