Wheeling Orchesis presents ‘Polychromatic’
Wheeling Orchesis will present its annual show, this year titled “Polychromatic,” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 24-26, in the school’s Robert E. Sang Theater.
This year’s concert will celebrate the colorful diversity and creativity of the 32 members in Orchesis, which is reflected in the title. Styles featured on the program include tap, classical Indian dance, lyrical, jazz, Polynesian dance, modern, and musical theater.
Guest artist pieces were created by Richard Smith (Inaside Dance Chicago), Crystal Ellis-Abdullah (Wheeling High School Orchesis assistant), Corey Nagel (Matrix Dance Improv), and David Acevedo, (Wheeling High School Orchesis alum, professional Hawaiian dancer and founder of Hokule’a Academy of Polynesian Arts).
The Wheeling High School choir, under the direction of Kirstin Snelten, will also perform a work with Orchesis members.
This year’s three-night concert run features a number of special events in celebration of the 20th show under current director Diane Rawlinson. The Thursday night performance will include a piece with members and their siblings performing together.
On Friday, previous participants in the winter Children’s Workshop will be invited to perform in Kidz Kompany.
Finally, a 20-year Orchesis alumni reunion reception will be held before Saturday night’s show. Alumni from classes of 1992 through 2010, along with the previous Orchesis assistants, will gather to perform, socialize and tour the dance area.
