Free fitness fusion class offered Feb. 11
Get a head start on your summer look with the Schaumburg Park District's new class, Piloxing.
A complimentary introductory session will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11 at the Community Recreation Center, 505 N. Springinsguth Road.
Between 400 and 800 calories are burned per hour during the interval-based class. Piloxing is not a walk in the park. The class blends boxing and Pilates moves in a sequence that keeps participants on their feet and sculpts muscles.
Described as fun and challenging by Piloxing creator Viveca Jensen, the program is a different approach to fitness.
“The Piloxing method encourages participants to go barefoot to strengthen ankles, and wear half-pound gloves to aid in controlled movement,” explained Park District Instructor Colette Madsen.
“It's all about core discipline and strengthening,” Madsen said.
Madsen, a second-year fitness instructor at the park district, was looking for a niche class to teach when she heard about Piloxing. After a workshop with Jensen, Madsen was certified in the technique.
“It's an interesting combination of methods,” said Park District Fitness Supervisor Jennie Bever. “Colette introduced the class idea to me and I couldn't turn it down. The industry trend today fuses fitness routines.”
Newcomers will easily adjust to Piloxing, making it ideal for people of all fitness levels and ages.
Piloxing is on the Park District's spring schedule of Fitness Unlimited beginning March 20. Classes are held on Fridays from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Community Recreation Center. An additional free class is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, March 18.
