Seattle assistant joins Bears’ staff

The Bears Wednesday hired Mike Phair as their defensive line coach to replace Eric Washington, who left on Monday to join the Carolina Panthers.

In Carolina, Washington joins the staff of new head coach Ron Rivera, a former linebacker and defensive coordinator with the Bears.

Phair spent the past six seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, including the last three as an assistant coach, following three years as an area scout. Phair was a defensive assistant last season, an assistant defensive line coach in 2009, and the assistant linebackers coach in 2008.

Before working for the Seahawks, Phair spent three seasons in the college scouting department of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also coached at Arizona State as a graduate assistant/defense from 1999-2000 and at Tiffin University, where he coached linebackers and special teams in 2001.
