If yes, please explain: NoCandidate's Key Issues Key Issue 1 The board of education and administration have worked hard to bring the district from a deficit position to one with an annual balanced budget while still providing an exceptional school experience for our nearly 9,000 students. We have done this through careful planning for curricular, operational and facility needs and we need to continue to do so.Key Issue 2 To ensure that there are opportunities for all of our students to be successful after high school we need to offer a rigorous and contemporary curriculum that will prepare our them for the challenges they will face as adults. We also need to endorse a classroom model which differentiates instruction and offers the supports students need.Key Issue 3 We need to recognize that theschool is only part of the equation when it comes to the success of our young people. We need to continue to strengthen our partnerships with first and foremost our parents but also our village governments, park districts, business communities, law enforcement and health providers.Questions Answers What are your thoughts on the district's recent move to a standard curriculum across all four schools? The idea that one got a better education on ""the hill"" is an old one. Every student who completes Algebra I should be assured that they have all learned the same thing. With a common curriculum and common evaluation teachers can share best practices which gives all our students the best chance for success. How does the district maintain its momentum, budget-wise, after digging out of a huge deficit in recent years to essentially break even this year?We maintain the momentum by continuing to keep our eye on the big picture. We have begun a practice not just in the finance area, but in curriculum and facilities also, to always look critically on a five year view. These plans are reviewed and adjusted regularly. Finally, the board has to always remind itself of that huge deficit and how hard it was to get out of.With lights coming soon and turf installed last year, how do you maximize the benefits that Memorial Field at West provides to the district? Should anything be done to accommodate nearby residents who have complained about this? The board is committed and has instructed the administration to solicit community feedback regarding Memorial Field. We are just at the beginning of this process and want to look at concerns and possible solutions that work for all concerned parties. In light of an incident at Glenbard South High School last year in which violent-sounding notes were passed among students, how do you balance parents' need to know with students' privacy when such situations arise? When it comes to violence our administrators take their lead from law enforcement. We live in an age when every threat is taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. Administrators need to be as forthcoming as possible but have an obligation to be sure the information they are sharing is true. Nothing can do more damage than gossip and innuendo. How satisfied are you that your district is preparing students for the next stage in their lives, whether it be from elementary into high school or high school into college or full-time employment? What changes, if any, do you think need to be made?I am sasified that we are making progress but we still have much work to do. Iniatives that will ensure our students are prepared for the adult world they will face upon graduation have begun and continue to develop. I have carried a quote in my wallet since my first election to the BOE. It equates student success, even that of an unmotivated student, to the relationship that student has with an interested adult. We must always remember that the success of any high school is due to the mutually respectful working relationship between every student and his or her teacher.
