Does it do enough to connect with kids from other racial or cultural backgrounds or to reach students and families who don't speak English as their primary language? If not, cite programs you'd recommend. There are various programs we offer to reach out to our largest population of English language learners, our Spanish speaking students and their families. The first is the Hispanic Achievement Committee which is a group that promotes awareness and appreciation of Hispanic culture. We have also started the Latino mentoring program and its objective is to increase academic achievement among Latino students by increasing the number of students taking AP courses and receiving AP credit as well as providing students with an adult advocate to help them become engaged in the Stevenson community and achieve success upon graduating.Should the district pursue mergers or partnerships with other districts to save money? Provide examples. We already pursue partnerships with other districts to save money. For example we share bus service with other districts and our cost in the contract we signed recently declined from previous years. Some residents have questioned district finances and taxes homeowners pay to Stevenson. Do you agree with the way finances have been run? Please explain. We are a fiscally responsible district citing the following reasons:S P AAA Bond ratingrecently voted to abate 100% of tax levy increase to taxpayers (know of no other district that has done that in Illinois)We have one of the lowest costs per pupil of peer schools. We continue to look at any ways we can cut our budget without negatively effecting the students. How involved should the board and parents be in choosing reading materials for students? Should parents be able to veto books assigned to students? Please explain.Parents should always be involved in their student's education. If they object to something their children read, they should bring it up to their teachers and the head of the department to see if there are alternatives. But neither the board or parents should choose the books our students read. We appropriately count on our faculty and administration to choose books that help educate our children. The Statesman battled questions over perceived censorship. Should high-school journalists have the same First Amendment rights as professionals? Explain your opinion.Everyone is entitled to First Amendment rights, but censorship isn't the issue with the Statesman. The Statesman is a learning experience, affiliated with our journalism curriculum. It is important that our students learn to be a journalist. Editors review copy, just as they do at the Daily Herald. In this case, teachers review copy to insure that the student is acting as a journalist. We want our students to learn to be accurate and balanced journalists.
