Sisters earn gold in all-around at St. Charles meet

Sibling rivalry had a happy, and rather unusual, ending at the recent Bravo Classic gymnastics meet when two Grayslake sisters both came away with all-around gold medals.

Maddie and Lizzie Jacobs, who compete on the Level 7 team for Ultimate Gymnastics of Gurnee, not only both claimed the top spot in their respective age groups, but they did so with identical all-around scores: 36.975.

Maddie, who competes in the 12-year-old age group, placed first on vault and bars and took bronze on floor exercise. Her sister, Lizzie, won silver on both beam and floor in the 11-year-old age group and was fourth on uneven bars.

The sisters’ achievements were just part of a successful Level 7 performance, which saw the team take first place at the meet held in St Charles. Matching Maddie’s two event golds in the 12-year-old age group, teammate Abigail Pierce claimed the top spot on both beam and floor and took silver in the all-around.

There was also a return to vaulting form for last year’s State Champion Tiffany Groenke, who won gold in the 11-year-old age group, while teammate Emily Whitis placed first on both beam and floor.

In the 7- to 10-year-old age group, Ella Peter came away with two gold and two silver medals. In the 13 and over group, Allison O’Connell scored a personal best, 9.65, on vault to win gold, and Kaylin Mathiesen won both beam and floor exercise.

After sitting out last week’s St. Jude Benefit meet in Peoria, Level 9’s Ally Hoyer looked strong, claiming gold in the all-around in the 9- to 13-year-old age group. She also came away with silver on floor and bronze on vault. Fourteen-year-old Emily Basara placed third on both vault and floor.

The Level 5 team posted some excellent scores but came up against strong competition. Gracie Gnatt won her first club gold medal on beam in the 7- to 8-year-old age group, and Nora Steinlein posted an impressive 9.60 to win gold on bars in the 12 and up age group. Also in this age group, Kristina Esdale notched one silver and three bronze medals. Meanwhile, 10-year-old Jessica Pasquesi’s 9.60 on floor was enough to capture silver.

At Level 6, Lake Forest’s Belle Smith won silver on bars and in the all-around in the 13-and-over age group. There were also silver medals for Sonte Turnage on bars and Leah Medennwaldt on vault in the 7-10-year age group.
