Wheeling H.S. is top jazz band at festival

More than 80 jazz bands performed at the Northshore Jazz Festival on Jan. 22, hosted by Glenbrook South High School, where the Wheeling High School Jazz Band 1 again captured the Grand Championship.

This marks the second time that has Wheeling garnered the Grand Champion Award, having first won it four years ago.

The band played three songs, including "Groove Merchant" by Thad Jones, which featured sophomore David Robertson (trumpet), senior Billy Kort (trumpet), and senior Chris Schwarz (baritone saxophone). The band's second selection was "When You Fall In Love" by Matt Catingub, featuring senior J.T. Teichert (alto saxophone). The set ended with "Have You Heard" by Pat Metheny and featured Kort, Teichert, and junior Alex Linzmeier (guitar).

Kort and Teichert were named outstanding soloists of the festival. Junior Caroline Vetter (baritone saxophone) won an outstanding soloist award with the Wheeling Jazz Band II.

The Wheeling Jazz Bands are directed by Brian Logan and Mark Hiebert.
