Elgin man charged in Schaumburg robbery

The FBI has charged an Elgin man with the Sunday robbery of a TCF Bank branch in Schaumburg.

Kharl R. Williams, 43, was hit with one count of bank robbery, a felony, in U.S. District Court in Chicago. He is accused of taking approximately $1,162 in cash from the bank branch inside the Jewel store at 2501 W. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg Sunday morning.

According to the FBI complaint, a man approached the bank counter at 10:10 a.m. and handed a teller a note that read, “Give me all the money no dye packs knowone (sic) will get hurt do what I ask of you!”

A second teller also saw the note, and observed as the first teller removed approximately $1,162 from the teller drawer and handed it to the man. Both also related that the man said something to the effect of “Give me the hundreds too.”

The two tellers told authorities they saw the man try to exit the Jewel store through the automatic entrance door, but was unable to open it. He then turned around, walked past the teller counter again and went out through the exit door.

At about 10:16 a.m. Sunday, after receiving a tip from Elgin police, Schaumburg officers reportedly stopped a black Chevrolet Tahoe at Slingerland Drive and Syracuse Lane, about 1¼ miles from the TCF Bank.

The officers identified the driver as Williams from his driver’s license and upon searching him discovered $1,140 cash in his possession.

The two bank tellers were brought to where officers had stopped the vehicle and both identified Williams as the man who had robbed the bank, authorities said.

Video surveillance of the bank branch also yielded footage, which led FBI agents to also identify Williams as the man who approached the tellers at the bank.

Williams appeared before Magistrate Judge Maria Valdez in Chicago Tuesday where he was formally charged and ordered held without bond, pending his next court appearance which has not yet been scheduled.
