Elgin man wins prestigious DAR award

The Signal Hill Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, presented the 2010 NSDAR Conservation Award to Gary Swick of Elgin on Tuesday, Dec. 14.

The NSDAR Conservation Award, consisting of a medal and certificate, can be presented to any man or woman with a distinguished conservation record.

Swick was recognized for his outstanding achievement as both an educator and volunteer. He taught environmental science to Dundee-Crown High School students for over 30 years, established the Friends of the Fox River watershed monitoring network and helped to save hundreds of acres of open space. Swick and his students have an impressive record for tree planting and have also won awards for their school recycling program.

Swick's innovative teaching methods have inspired a generation of students, parents and the community to become better stewards of the land and water. The Signal Hill Chapter was very pleased to present Swick with this prestigious award.
