Driver OK after swerving onto frozen Elburn pond

The driver of a pickup truck was hospitalized Thursday night after his vehicle swerved off the road in Elburn and onto a frozen pond, according to authorities.

Friends of the driver said the man was cut off, swerved to avoid an accident on Hughes Road near the intersection of Pouley Road and ended up on top of a retention pond. He also hit a road sign during the accident, which smashed the pickup's windshield.

The ice held up, and when rescue crews arrived on the scene just after 3:30 p.m., the man had ditched his truck and made it to land, according to fire officials.

The driver was transported to Delnor Hospital in Geneva with minor injuries.
