Butterfield closed after crash injures two

A portion of Butterfield Road near Wheaton was shut down for more than two hours Tuesday night after a head-on collision injured two motorists, according to authorities.

Deputies of the DuPage County sheriff's office remained at the scene of the crash on Butterfield Road, just east of Arrowhead Drive, late into Tuesday night.

Investigators said the crash occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m.

The drivers of both vehicles were taken to Central DuPage Hospital with what emergency personnel described as moderate to severe injuries. The driver of a Mercedes SUV had to be extracted from the vehicle, which ended up in a ditch.

All lanes of Butterfield Road from Orchard Road to Herrick Road were closed during the investigation.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.

No further information was available Tuesday night.
