Vernon Hills falls to Deerfield

John Carney scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, as Deerfield's boys basketball team defeated Vernon Hills 61-45 on final-day action of the 33rd annual Wheeling Wildcat Hardwood Classic on Thursday morning.

It was the first win in the tournament for the Warriors.

Vernon Hills entered the week with a 10-0 record but went 0-4 at Wheeling.

Darren Hoveydai led the Cougars with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. DaVaris Daniels had 13 points (three 3s), 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocked shots.

Deerfield also received double-digit scoring from Mack Watts (15 points, 6 rebounds) and Joshua Schur (14 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists).

The Warriors trailed 8-7 after one quarter but took a 23-19 lead into halftime and then outscored the Cougars 16-13 in the third quarter and 22-13 in the fourth.
