Fast start, finish lift Barrington past Lake Zurich

After getting off to a great start, Barrington's girls basketball team didn't stop until the end of the game on the way to capturing the consolation title of the Suburban Holiday Showcase.

Barrington raced past Lake Zurich 51-34 on Wednesday night at Trinity High School in River Forest.

Nicole Collins led the Fillies with 13 points and Abby Kirchoff added 12.

“I feel we're more successful when we spread our scoring out,” said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro, whose team is now 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the tournament. “We've had a couple of games with a few kids in double figures. We should be able to do it all the time, but we haven't been able to be consistent.”

Barrington scored the first 11 points, with Collins contributing with 5 of them. The Fillies held a 13-4 advantage over Lake Zurich (7-9, 2-3) after the first quarter.

The Fillies extended the lead to 27-11 starting the third quarter and led 35-19 on a Shelby Whigham 3-point play with 3:41 left in the period.

“I thought we went on a decent run in the third quarter,” Barreiro said. “But then we got a little too relaxed for a while. It's been a problem for us and it's something we need to overcome.”

Lake Zurich aggressively rallied behind Dori Dorras, who scored 6 of her 8 points as the Bears closed the quarter with an 8-0 run and trailed 35-27.

“It was a nice third quarter and one of the best we've played in a while,” Lake Zurich coach Chris Bennett said. “When we decide to play defense, we can be pretty good at it. But then we lose our energy and we can't get it back.”

The Fillies' Abby Kirchoff hit a well-timed 3-pointer 20 seconds into the fourth quarter and Kirchoff hit another trey to cap a 10-2 run for a 45-29 advantage with 3:48 remaining.

“All of a sudden, I thought (Lake Zurich) wasn't on us as much in the fourth quarter,” said Kirchoff, who battled foul trouble for most of the game. “I felt I was more open to shoot.

“We do a lot of pick and rolls. When you go out (to the perimeter) sometimes you can find yourself open.”

Lake Zurich was led by Karlissa Skarb with 12 points; Katherine Anderson added 8.
