Gas, sales taxes hurt the poor most

I'm curious: If Democrats are so concerned with helping the poor, as they claim, why do they support high taxes on gasoline and other merchandise in Chicago and Cook County?

Does this not disproportionately affect the very same people they claim to “care” about the most?
