Girls basketball / Lake County roundup
Chanae Brown was on her game, and so was Round Lake's girls basketball team.
The Panthers wrapped up the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic with a 61-36 win over North Chicago at Woodstock North on Wednesday, as Brown scored a career-high 26 points.
Krystal Pitts added 16 for Round Lake (6-9, 2-3), led 14-3 after one quarter and 23-13 at halftime.
“Probably our most complete game of the year,” Panthers coach Howard Conkling said.
Grayslake North 37, Woodstock North 23: At Woodstock, “defense was the story,” coach Jim Sarver said, as his Knights won their fourth in a row to capture the second-place bracket in the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic.
Brianna Leon scored 10 points to lead Grayslake North (5-10, 4-1 tournament), which avenged a 62-54 loss two weeks ago. Brooke Sauer added 8 points and 9 rebounds, and Allie Ceglarek also scored 8 points.
Stevenson 54, Niles West 49: At Barrington, coach Tom Dineen joked that his Patriots “held” Niles West junior Jewel Lloyd to 37 points.
The more important thing for Dineen was that his team won, as Michelle O'Brien scored a season-high 26 points, sinking four 3-pointers.
Stevenson (10-4) held on down the stretch, as McKinley Imus made 4 of 4 free throws and Kari Moffat went 2 of 2 from the line.
Imus and Anna Morrissey (two 3s) each finished with 8 points, while Moffat had seven.
“Our team defense was excellent,” Dineen said. “I don't think we did a bad job on Lloyd. We wanted to make sure that no one else was going to hurt us, and that played out.”
Grayslake Central 52, Palatine 42: At Warren, Rebekah Llorens had 15 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocked shots, as the Rams rallied in the fourth quarter to win their 11th in a row and improve to 4-0 in the Blue Devil Classic.
Skyler Jessop added 11 for Grayslake Central (13-2), while Kat Dickson contributed 9 points and 7 rebounds. Maddy Miller had 8 points for the Rams, who trailed 32-29 after three quarters.
