Don't forget waning band of heroes

Jim Slusher's Dec. 7 column mention of Pearl Harbor was a real page turner unfortunately. I was disappointed to finally locate any mention of our first “9/11” buried on Page 9 among holiday ads for frameless shower doors.

The space afforded the article was matched earlier by such newsworthy (?) issues as District 87's credit rating and Comcast's technical glitch. Your front page led with a huge photo of Freddy Martinez flipping Mid-Eastern kebabs in Naperville. Nothing against Freddy, but two World War II survivors, Art and Shirley Herriford, deserve far better visibility and mention on this historic American day of remembrance.

In the future, let's see to it that we do a better job of honoring this waning band of 3,000 heroes whose contribution to our country merits at least as much ink and image as free ad space for recession-resistant restaurants.
