Geneva Commons helping find homes for pets
The perfect Christmas gift will be available for adoption this weekend at Geneva Commons.
Two area animal shelters, TAILS Humane Society in DeKalb and Animal Care League in Oak Park, are hosting a Jingle Paws Adoption Event Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 18-19, at the Randall Road shopping center.
On both days, they'll have between 40 and 60 puppies, dogs, cats and kittens available for adoption right at Geneva Commons.
“What better Christmas gift to get yourself or your family than a pet that will love you all year long?” said Michelle Groeper, assistant executive director of TAILS Humane Society.
The goal of the event is to find homes for many loving and healthy animals who are looking for a loving family to live with, Groeper said.
To find your animal, you'll need to head to the empty retail space between LOFT and J. Jill. The space will serve as the temporary home for the animals during the event.
“It's a great spot for us because it doesn't have carpeting,” Groeper laughed.
There also will be some pets available those days through the shelters at the Wet Nose store at Geneva Commons, which is helping to sponsor the event, she said.
She added that Wet Nose would be offering some discounts this weekend on products to anyone who adopts an animal Saturday or Sunday.
TAILS holds off-site adoptions often, but has never done one at Geneva Commons.
Groeper said organizers thought it would be a fun place to hold an adoption event, especially around the holidays with the mall busy with shoppers.
It is a great central location, and organizers are hoping many people will come out to find a new pet to add to their lives.
The goal is to place at least 50 pets through the event, she said.
“We're pretty excited Geneva Commons partnered with us and donated the space to use for the weekend,” she said. “We have a lot of people really working to help us. They've all been really accommodating to us.”
The pets will be available from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18-19.

Shoe drive: It's little bit of a drive from Randall Road, but if you have some shoes you no longer need, you might want to make the drive for a good cause.
The Big Red Shoe.com at the outlet mall in Huntley is hosting a shoe drive to benefit SOLES4SOULS through Dec. 31.
You can drop your gently-worn shoes at the store. They will be used to help someone in need. The organization helps everyone from people who've been impacted by a natural disaster to people in extreme poverty.
