Cops say teen rammed stolen SUV into police car

A Lake Zurich teenager accused of leading Crystal Lake police on a high-speed chase and intentionally ramming a stolen sport utility vehicle into a squad car more than a week ago, turned himself into Crystal Lake police Thursday, authorities said.

Jakob D. Nelson, 17, of the 23500 block of North Cottage Road, was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle, aggravated fleeing and eluding, aggravated battery and three counts of criminal damage to government supported property.

His bail was set Friday morning at $60,000, and he needs to pay $6,000 to get out of jail while the case is pending.

The officer pursuing Nelson was not seriously injured in the crash and did not require medical attention, according to a news release.

Police say the officer tried pulling Nelson over in the 1998 Ford Explorer at 4:39 a.m. Dec. 1 because it was going 60 mph in a 30 mph zone.

Nelson refused to stop, and as the SUV headed north on Terra Cotta Road, it entered a subdivision on Glenbrook Road, police said.

The officer stopped his squad car nearby and Nelson deliberately slammed into the car, police said.

Both vehicles were disabled as a result of the crash and Nelson ran from the scene, police said. Authorities later determined the SUV had been stolen from Lake County and Nelson subsequently turned himself in.

Nelson is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday in Woodstock.

If found guilty of one of the most serious charges, he could spend between three and seven years in prison.
