Prospect Heights 23-year-old killed in Mount Prospect crash

Mount Prospect police are investigating the death of a Prospect Heights man whose car struck a tree on Route 83 this morning.

The deceased driver of the vehicle was identified as 23-year-old Hector Nieto Jr. of Prospect Heights. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

Mount Prospect police Officer Mark Bechtold said Nieto was on his way to work and was wearing his seat belt. At this point in the investigation, neither drugs nor alcohol are considered to be factors in the crash, he added.

Bechtold said witnesses reported seeing a Toyota hatchback traveling south on Route 83 approaching Highland Street just before 8 a.m. Friday.

For reasons still unknown, the vehicle began spinning out of control, left the roadway and struck a tree in the parkway of 518 N. Main St. (Route 83).

Mount Prospect paramedics transported Nieto, who was driving alone, to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights where he was pronounced dead.

Southbound Route 83 was closed for several hours at Kensington Road during the early stages of the investigation, but has since reopened, Bechtold said.

Anyone with further information about the crash is asked to call Mount Prospect police at (847) 870-5656.
