Wheaton Warrenville South celebrates — again

All this celebrating at Wheaton Warrenville South might be getting just a bit old hat.

Team members, the student body and even family members assembled Wednesday to mark the high school's second consecutive Class 7A state football championship.

But don't think for a moment the thrill is gone.

“It means a lot, and it's been a fun time,” Tigers quarterback Reilly O' Toole said. “We have a lot of good guys and it's been awesome. This is the best time of my life.”

Tanya Davis, football team mom, said Wheaton Warrenville South has had a phenomenal two years. Both have been special, but this year's undefeated season was especially fulfilling. She also noted that it was a thrill to knock off Maine South, which had gone two years without a loss, during the regular season, a game that was televised on ESPN.

The Tigers capped a 14-0 season a 28-17 win over Lake Zurich. It was Wheaton Warrenville's seventh title in 10 championship game appearances. It also marked the second time the school has achieved back-to-back titles, with the other pair coming in 1995-96.

O'Toole threw for 182 yards and rushed for 48 yards in the championship game in Champaign. Matt Rogers provided a 37-yard touchdown run and finished with 87 yards on 13 carries. The win also avenged a 7-3 loss to Lake Zurich in the 2007 state finals.
