St. Francis
Coach: Shawn Healy (fifth year, 67-42).
Last year: 14-14, 7-1, first in the Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division; lost 62-51 to Riverside-Brookfield in the Class 3A Wheaton Academy regional final.
Top players: Ryan Coyle, sr., F; Nick Donati, jr., G; Colin O’Donnell, sr., G; Zach Roswold, jr., C; Mike Scholl, sr., G; Brian Spahn, jr. G; Eric Stout, sr., G; Mike Yanan, sr., F.
Scouting report: A rough nonconference schedule won’t help the overall record but will pay off in the SCC Blue. The 6-4 Coyle, who averaged 11.4 points and 8.6 rebounds last year, is a three-year starter who will be among the SCC’s best. He’s the Spartans’ sole returning starter, so Healy hopes to create chemistry among players like shooter Stout, the 6-4 Scholl and Yanan, who hustled his way into the rotation. The trademark half-court trap may give way to half-court defense this season. Leaders Donati and O’Donnell and the 6-7 Roswold let Healy go big or small as the Spartans try to defend the SCC Blue title. “I think anybody could beat anybody on any given night,” he said.
