Three dead in Westmont shooting

Three people, including a six-year-old girl, were found shot to death in their apartment in Westmont Friday morning, police said.

Officers were responding to a request for a well-being check from a relative at 10:04 a.m. when they found the victims at the apartment, 515 W. 61st St., according to a news release from the Westmont Police Department.

All appeared to have died as a result of gunshot wounds, police said.

The victims are identified as Linda Brennan, 51, Mark Chapman, 50, and Julia Moore, the 6-year-old granddaughter of Brennan, police said.

There were no signs of forced entry or evidence of a struggle within the apartment.

The preliminary investigation indicates the incident was isolated and only involved the three residents of the apartment, police said.

A weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.

Neighbor Frank Slowik told ABC 7 he entered the apartment through a window after police couldn't get in. He said he found Brennan and Chapman dead on a couch.

It's unclear exactly when the shootings occurred, but Slowik said he heard gunshots around 1 a.m. Wednesday, thinking they were fireworks.

Brennan and Chapman were divorced, but had been living together with Julia Moore, ABC 7 reported.

“The family was a really good family (and) very easygoing. They definitely loved and cared for their granddaughter,” Slowik said. “It's hard to comprehend the loss of any life, especially when it comes to a young girl like that.”

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Autopsies on the three victims will be conducted Saturday.
