Scouting Hersey girls basketball
Hersey
Coach: Mary Fendley (13th season)
Last year's record: 28-7, 7-3
Graduated players: Kari Tunney, Andrea Perkins, Domenica Giancola, Julia Fredian, Kathryn Korff, Maddie Swan
Returning players: Jen Hall (5-5 Jr. G), Stefanie Mueller (5-10 Sr.), Megan Rogowski (5-9 Sr. G), Eileen Zydek (5-9 Sr. F), Maggie Hogen (5-11 Jr. F)
Newcomers: Casey Weyrich (5-5 So.), Ashley Raulli (5-10 So.), Renee Poulos (5-9 Fr.), Corinne Busby (5-6 Jr.), Michaela Dwyer (5-9 Sr).
Outlook: The Huskies had a gold-star season last winter and their star is back all-time career scoring leader Rogowski, who helped lead the Huskies to a third-place finish in Class 4A. "It's impossible to replace the four starters we graduated," said Fendley, who has a 251-125 career record. "But we have a pretty good place to start having a returning player like Megan. She's so talented." Zydek has been a part-time player for the past three years. "So she is like having a returning starter," Fendley said.
"She is smart, can hit shots and has a knack for getting in good rebounding position." The Huskies lose some height at the post. Mueller will work inside and Hogen will get a lot of playing time. "Mueller did a nice job rebounding on the junior varsity and I think she'll be able to have the same results on the varsity," Fendley said. "Those girls (Mueller, Hogen and Zydek) all worked with Maddie Swan and Kathryn Korff (graduated posts) last year in practice so they know what it takes inside." At the point will be Hall, beginning her third season on the varsity, and taking the spot of all-area pick Julia Fredian. "She is a great ballhandler and has really improved her footwork," Fendley said. "I think she will do a good job running the show."
