Barrington's Muskat has date with Dayton

Kelly Muskat's grandmother and great grandmother were club golf champions at Rolling Green Country Club in Arlington Heights.

Her father Wally was an all-conference golfer at Barrington High School.

Kelly has hardly let down the family tradition.

The Barrington senior has made a verbal commitment to play golf at the Division I level for the University of Dayton.

“After receiving offers from several schools to play golf, I chose Dayton,” said Muskat, who made two visits to the school where she plans to study business.

Muskat was a top golfer for Fillies Hall of Fame coach Jodi Schoeck in the Mid-Suburban League this fall. She recorded her career-best 72 at the Barrington Invite at Bonnie Dundee Golf Course in Carpentersville in August.

Muskat was just 1 stroke shy of the school record set by Pam Buff in 1996.

“It's impossible to replace coach Schoeck, but I really feel good about playing for coach Sally Kosters at Dayton,” Muskat said. “I spent some time with the team and they are a great group of women. I am hopeful with a lot of hard work this summer I can contribute as a freshman.”

Muskat said the possibility of playing as a freshman made her decision easier. The Flyers' home course, NCR Country Club in Dayton, was also a huge factor in Muskat's decision.

“Having a championship-caliber course only minutes from the campus is a real privilege,” said Muskat, who won two Illinois Junior Golf Association events this summer and ranked third of 161 girls in the IJGA Player of the Year rankings.

She shot the first hole-in-one of her career this summer in the Purdue Invitational on the Boilermakers' Kampen Course, and she was the Illinois Junior Match Play runner-up qualifying with a 75 and losing in the final match 3-and-2.

“I already miss being a Filly golfer, but I am really excited to continue playing Division 1 golf in college,” Muskat said. “I have worked hard to get this far, but I know I need to improve further to be competitive at the collegiate level.

“At least playing for coach Schoeck at Barrington has given me the foundation to advance to the next level. I'm glad the decision part is over, and I am looking forward to finishing a great senior year at Barrington High School.”
