Teen driver charged as an adult in fatal Bolingbrook crash

A 17-year-old who crashed an SUV into a Bolingbrook apartment early Saturday morning, killing a sleeping woman inside, will face charges of reckless homicide as an adult, officials said Sunday.

Police say Luis Benito of Bolingbrook drove his 2002 Chevy SUV into the building on the 300 block of Woodcreek Drive at 2:23 Saturday morning.

Bolingbrook police Lt. Mike Rompa said police suspect alcohol was a factor in the accident but blood-alcohol numbers were not yet available Sunday.

Josefina Prospero, 48, was confirmed dead shortly after the accident. Her boyfriend, Juan Nicholas, survived the crash with minor injuries.

Authorities say Benito and a 17-year-old passenger, who has since been released, tried to flee the crash site but were stopped by police. Benito, who lives in the same apartment complex as the victim, is being held at the Will County Adult Detention Facility in Joliet.

Reckless homicide is punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000.
