Learn to make candy as a gift at Morkes Chocolates
If you're hoping to make the tastiest treats on the holiday sweet table, you have a chance to learn from the experts.
Morkes Chocolates, just off Randall Road in Algonquin, is hosting classes on how to make your own confections.
Just in time for the holidays, Morkes, 2755 W. Algonquin Road, is hosting a make-your-own fudge and peanut brittle class.
At 7 p.m. Dec. 7, Morkes will have all of the ingredients out and ready so you can make the no-cook fudge and the peanut brittle. And, the best part is, everything you make during the class, you can take home to indulge in and share with your family and friends.
Of course, you take home the knowledge of how to make it, too, store manager Claudia Kendzior said, which is great around this time of year.
“(Participants) can repeat this at home so they can use it for gift giving,” she said.
Kendzior suggested registering for the class early because Morkes' classes usually do fill up.
“They're popular,” Kendzior said. “They're a lot of fun for couples, moms and teenage girls, girlfriends, groups, anyone that wants to come out.
“It's kind of like a quilting bee. Everyone comes together and makes their own creations and just talks and has a good time.”
However, she said, you also can schedule your own class if you have a group of 10 or more people and go in any time to learn. They'll set aside an hour and a half to teach your group whatever it is you want to make. They also can bring some of their classes to a location of your choice.
In addition to the fudge and peanut brittle class, Morkes also offers several other classes throughout the year.
They try to offer at least one class per month in both their Algonquin and Palatine locations.
This month, they taught guests how to mold their own chocolate turkey for their Thanksgiving dinner table.
Coming up in January, they'll teach you how to make all-butter toffee and no-cook cream center chocolates. At the end of the class, Kendzior says, you should be able to know how to make a box of finished chocolates.
Many of the classes are themed with the months. For example, in April you'll learn to make chocolate Easter eggs. But, then, some of the classes are just plain fun, too, she said.
For example, in May, you'll make a half-pound high heel chocolate shoe.

More fun with chocolate: This weekend, Harry and David's along Randall Road in Geneva Commons is hosting its own chocolate-themed event.
From 1 to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, you'll get to try a free taste of the store's new chocolate collection.
It's a great opportunity to sample all of the yummies you're considering giving as gifts this Christmas, or serving to your holiday guests.
