Scores of cars vandalized in McHenry

Police in McHenry are investigating a rash of vandalism to parked cars that occurred early Wednesday morning, just days after headstones were toppled in two cemeteries.

Police have received calls from about 140 residents reporting damage to their vehicles in driveways that left most with broken rear windows, said Deputy Chief Robert Lumber of the McHenry Police Department.

As many as 180 cars were damaged, since some residences had more than one car parked in the driveway.

The vandalism appears to be random since cars were found damaged all over town, Lumber said.

No suspects have been identified, he said.

It's unclear if the car vandalism is related to headstone damage at St. Mary's and Woodland cemeteries, where between 50 and 60 headstones were toppled there Sunday night.

“The fact this happened two days later, it's very speculative to say whether they're related or not,” Lumber said.

At this point, police also don't know have enough evidence to suggest the car vandalism was in response to Tuesday night's election results, Lumber said.

Anyone with information on the vandalism is asked to call the McHenry Police criminal investigation division at (815) 363-2143 or the police tip line at (815) 363-2124.
