Lakes tops Fenton in OT

Lakes is continuing to break new ground with its boys soccer program.

Brian Werchek scored game-winning goal in the first overtime to lead the Eagles past Fenton 2-1 in their own Class 2A sectional final on Saturday.

Lakes (11-9-5) next meets Burlington Central in the Barrington supersectional at 5 p.m. Tuesday night.

In the a sectional championship opportunity two seasons ago, the Eagles missed out on advancement when a goal was waived off.

This year, it was Lakes' time to move on.

“When the game was done (Saturday), I had to look at the situation for at least 10 seconds,” Lakes coach Kevin Kullby said. “I wasn't sure if the goal would be called back.

“You can't ask for anything better. However, this game could've gone either way.”

Werchek scored the golden goal in the 85th minute. He got a pass from Bojan Zgonjanin and one-timed the kick.

Jonathan Stanley tied the game with a header in the 50th minute off a Scott Brugioni cross. Stanley has scored 7 goals in 4 postseason games.

Fenton (15-8-3) got off to a quick start and got a goal from Giovanni Ballon in the fifth minute. Kevin Garcia assisted.

However, the Bison had a difficult time getting another goal the rest of the way.

“It was a well deserved win for (Lakes),” Fenton coach David Alvarez said. “I thought we left them in the game. We dominated the first half and had only one goal to show for it. We needed to get a second goal.”
